Cape Town International Airport Central Terminal Renovation Complete for the World Cup of Soccer 2010 Renovation on the 5 story central terminal at Cape Town's International Airport is now complete for the World Cup of Soccer 2010. Both domestic and international passengers will now be directed to the consolidated check-in desks. The 50 000 square meter terminal greatly increases the capacity of the airport to 120 counters for check-in, 20 digital self service machines and a state-of-the-art security screening area. "The airport management has worked hard to ensure the smooth migration of procedures to the new terminal," commented Diedre Hendricks, CTIA communications manager. "It has taken a tremendous amount of cooperation between the South Africa Airports Company (ACSA), the airline corporations, retailers and various government agencies -- the entire airport community is so proud of the terminal" as World Cup of Soccer 2010 preparations complete. The retail facility has almost doubled in size as well; from 44 to 74 retailers. This retail expansion will see brands such as Woolworth's, Ocean Basket and Steers added along with a 1,000 square meter spur that seats as many as 500 people; making it the Western Cape's largest. A R103 million sorting system for passengers world cup baggage has been installed. The fully automated system is set to handle 3,000 bags an hour. Additional passenger boarding bridges have been added for the use of domestic passengers. The roads around the airport are also being upgraded to improve vehicle movement during the world cup. Passenger drop off right at the terminal is now possible via the planned drop-off lane. Completion of World Cup of Soccer 2010 road upgrades is scheduled for March 2010 with a budgeted cost of R120-million. ACSA is ensuring a smooth transition for passengers with the hiring of as many as 80 temporary staff to assist airport employees in the effort to guide passengers using the new terminal. "We know changes will confuse airport users -- that's the reason for going beyond the call of duty to assist World Cup of Soccer 2010 passengers," said Hendricks. ACSA is recommending World Cup of Soccer 2010 passengers add 45 minutes to their time allocated to getting through check-in. Construction is not entirely complete as yet. The next couple of months will still see a large amount of activity. Additional projects are planned to be complete several months before World Cup of Soccer 2010 time including; the transport plaza, a multiple story parking structure, car rental via a consolidated facility and more aircraft parking stands. ![]() How They Made It To the World Cup of Soccer 2010; Part 1 South Africa.
